The Ravens were recruited on to the mysterious "Steve Canyon Program" from USAF pilots who were exceptional fliers and who wanted fly more combat missions with less `red tape' to constrain their actions than was possible in the mainstream Air Force. Robbins introduces to the norms, rituals and mythology of this cohesive group of fliers. We learn what it was like to operate as an FAC in a combat zone, to face enemy fire, to take hits, return to base only to fly yet another mission. He personalises the story with profiles of some of the Ravens who stamped their mark as warriors and, indeed, eccentrics on this exceptional group of fliers, men such as Fred "Magnet Ass" Platt and Lee Lue, a former Hmong schoolmaster, who was rated as one of the best Air Force pilots of the whole Vietnam War. In writing about individual Ravens Robbins draws extensively on interviews with those fliers who survived the war in Laos; this adds authenticity to the story. Nor does Robbins neglect what he calls the Big Picture: he describes and analyses how America was drawn into the secret war in Laos as a by product of the larger Vietnam War; how - when the war was no longer `secret' and the America was staring defeat in its face, with a President paralysed by Watergate - Kissinger negotiated a peace treaty that many Americans regarded as nothing less than a shameful betrayal of their Laotian and South Vietnamese allies.
