Nadine Gordimer, (born November 20, 1923, Springs, Transvaal [now in Gauteng], South Africa—died July 13, 2014, Johannesburg), South African novelist and short-story writer whose major theme was exile and alienation. She received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1991. Gordimer was born into a privileged white middle-class family and began reading at an early age. By the age of 9 she was writing, and she published her first story in a magazine when she was 15. Her wide reading informed her about the world on the other side of apartheid —the official South African policy of racial segregation—and that discovery in time developed into strong political opposition to apartheid. Never an outstanding scholar, she attended the University of the Witwatersrand for one year. In addition to writing, she lectured and taught at various schools in the United States during the 1960s and '70s. Gordimer's first book was Face to Face (1949), a collection of short stories. In 1953 a novel, The Lying Days, was published.

They wanted freedom, they wanted rights, they wanted to live life through their own eyes—not run by a bias government. Crime was a major result of apartheid, in which crime rates are still wildly high till this day. Crime is often correlated with poor individuals, and under the circumstances of apartheid, was often seen in neighborhoods of colored people. The unfair poverty-stricken lifestyle of most colored people in South Africa had made them more susceptible to becoming a criminal themselves, as can be seen in Oliver Schmitz's film: Mapantsula. In this South African film, the main character, Panic, is a young, black African man whom is portrayed as a gangster. He is poor and lives a life of crime, where he finds himself in jail. This is particularly beautiful and well written. Nearly as well written as an old classic. Nearly as emotive as a beautiful novela. A story of people of different cultures and races that met and decided to stay together in a place like South Africa in the worst of the racial regime in there. I liked it. Felt it could be better if we found out the destiny of such a sad love. Alas we were left hanging on how things turned out. Perhaps bad for the young black woman. This is really a sad story. One.. Listened to a New Yorker podcast - read by Tessa Hadley... was slightly disappointed... A man makes a request of a cashier at the supermarket. She helps him. Sparks happen and they have an affair. No big deal. Except, this is South Africa. Under apartheid. And he is white, and she is a person of colour. Where will this go? More importantly, where do they want it to go?
'Allesverloren', the stand-out story, which means 'everything lost' in Afrikaans, is about a widow who goes looking for the gay lover of her former husband. It begins: 'Whom to talk to? Grief is boring after a while, burdensome even to close confidants. After a very short while, for them. The long whole continues. A cord that won't come full circle, doesn't know how to tie a knot in a resolution. So whom to talk to. Speak. ' This story, with so little wasted, with such a controlled, precise tone, is a beautiful meditation on bereavement. What is lost in death? And what is now possible? Gordimer is a writer of extraordinary power and acuity. Her voice is remarkably controlled and restrained, in contrast with the subject matter of much of her work: the way people go about their daily lives and interactions with one another in the myriad tensions of a brutal police state. Like Toni Morrison and Alice Walker, Gordimer is adept at delineating the relationship between the personal and the political.
